Tall and elegant, the Wellington chest of drawers is a beautifully stylish piece and a gracious addition to any bedroom. As with all Savanna Wood Chests of Drawers, each drawer slides on a full timber frame giving maximum support to the drawer while ensuring an extremely strong carcass. This frame between drawers is time consuming to incorporate, but results in far superior construction.

The drawers of this piece are constructed with dovetail, and stopped dovetail joints. Here is what Fine Woodworking Magazine, America’s foremost magazine for professional woodworkers has to say about dovetail joints:

‘Considered one of the strongest and certainly the most beautiful of joints, the dovetail exacts a stiff price in terms of skill for the strength and good looks it provides.
Dovetails are probably the strongest method for joining two pieces of wood, surface to surface, with the grain running in the same direction. The dovetail joint provides considerable mechanical strength because when the joint is assembled, it can’t be twisted or racked. And the shape of the dovetail makes it impossible to take apart in one direction and difficult in the other. This joint stays together -- even without glue!’

The timber used to manufacture this masterpiece is probably the finest timber utilised anywhere in the world to make furniture, extremely hard with a fine, close grain and deep, rich natural colour. Zambezi Teak is a very dense, and therefore hard, wood. It is sometimes mistaken for Asian, Indian or Indonesian teak, which is a completely different species. Our Zambezi Teak is very much harder and more difficult to work. However, because it is so hard it is extremely resistant to biological attack and physical ware and tare, and will last, if looked after, for many hundreds of years.
